Diamond is cheap and lower level alternative to Um rune when it comes to improving shields.
You can remove what's inside a socket in Horadric Cube, by adding Hel rune and Scroll of Portal but you will lose whatever you inserted. There is no way to 'unsocket' - can only empty it by deletion.
