Horadric Cube
Cube is used for crafting, upgrading, creating items and transmuting ingredients.

The Horadric Cube is widely used for completing quests, increasing inventory slots, opening The Secret Cow Level, crafting, upgrading and creating new items, socketing and removing fillers from socketed items. It drops in the Halls of the Dead (Act 2) and from the High Council in Travincal (Act 3).
The Cube grants 3x4 slots while takes only 2x2, which allows you to carry more items in those 8 free slots (items are inactive when inside).
Initially the Cube is used as quest item. In Act 2 you need to combine the Staff of Kings and the Amulet of the Viper to make the Horadric Staff which is required for entering Tal Tasha's Chamber, where you can find the final boss of Act 2 - Duriel.
Using a proper formula (see Crafting Packs) you can craft items. Unlike Rare items, which can be gambled or dropped from monsters, Crafted items can only be created in the Cube by transmuting certain ingredients (rune+jewel+gem+base item). In most cases Crafted items are more powerful than any other rare/magic/unique or set item of the same type, e.g. Crafted Amulet can provide 20% FCR bonus which is useful to hit certain breakpoints and gives flexibility in item choice for other slots.
Upgrading is another way of making items more powerful with the help of the Cube. You can upgrade Rare/Unique items from Normal to Exceptional and from Exceptional to Elite versions by transmuting proper ingredients in the Cube (see Upgrading: Armor and Upgrading: Weapon).
The Horadric Cube is also used to roll sockets in normal (non-superior) unsocketed bases, e.g. you have normal Archon Plate, currently it has no sockets (can have up to 4 soc max) and you need it for Enigma runeword - 3 sockets, so you can try your luck by combining proper ingredients in the Cube. Note that amount of sockets will be random, so it may take few tries (multiple bases + socket packs) to get the amount of sockets you want.
Socketing via the Cube is the only way to obtain Eth-bug armor/shield/helm (see Socket Packs).
'Hel-ing' is the only way to remove fillers from the socketed Item. Hel Rune + TP Scroll + socketed item should be transmuted in the Cube (note that fillers will be irreversibly destroyed). It can be used to re-roll Runewords in order to get perfect stats.
The Red Portal to The Secret Cow Level can only be created in Rogue Encampment - Act 1 (Baal quest must be completed on that difficulty) if you combine Wirt's Leg and a Tome of Town Portal in the Cube. The Secret Cow Level is the only place where Cow King's Leathers Set can be obtained.
